Quest

For the exhibition "Quest", Boris Katz chose to respond to a pair of ancient ceramic figures from Zacatecas, West Mexico, dated 250 BCE–250 CE. These original forms, seated and wide-eyed, captured a mysterious presence—both intimate and otherworldly.

In his contemporary reinterpretation, Katz reanimates the ancient figures, lifting them from stillness into motion, from symbolic object to living encounter. With humor, tenderness, and formal precision, his sculptures preserve the original archetypes while transforming them into scenes of physical interaction and emotional complexity. The figures ride, carry, cling, and confront—locked in ambiguous relationships that echo both play and ritual.

The exhibition was curated by Talia Tokatly and Roni Ben Ari, and presented at the Open Museum of Photography, Tel-Hai, in 2016.
